We've worked with CFML for over 6+ years utilizing various Java libraries. We have been using Railo since version 2 Railo for our development purposes, along with Mach-II, coldspring and transfer. With the official launch at the end of 2009 all live engines were switched to the latest stable Railo version. When Railo 3.1 Open Source was announced we felt that this was definitely a step in the right direction in order to gain traction inside and outside the ColdFusion community. Just take a look around at how many tutorials and blog posts exist about Railo - it's amazing!
Overall it was a smooth process moving from the other CFML Engines to Railo. There were several reasons for the switch to Railo including: licencing costs, performance, and easier integration into automated setup procedures. We did come across several stumbling blocks during testing however, some of them compatibility issues and some of them bugs. The later ones were fixed in a reasonable time. Our advice: Run some serious tests against your existing code!
We are running Railo on Resin as we found it a rather easy platform to handle in comparison to other ones. tunesBag is running on dedicated servers and cloud computing resources. Therefore it was key for us to be able to integrate the engine seamlessly in our automated server setup, and thankfully for us Railo is very easy to handle for this task as it is customizeable and doesn't have a lot of overhead. Of course, as mentioned above, another reason was the licencing costs as the number of instances increases over time.
The separate configuration for each web is also a major advantage. We're very happy with the performance. Event Gateways are high on our wishlist and maybe some sort of Mini-Reactor included (running tasks etc).
Just give Railo a try and run your existing applications using this powerful CFML engine!
